The story
One of the oldest known cocktails, dating back to the early 1800s. Originally called the 'Whiskey Cocktail,' it was later referred to as 'Old-Fashioned' to distinguish it from newer variations.
Variations
Can be made with rye whiskey for a spicier profile. Some modern versions flame an orange peel over the drink. Wisconsin-style includes muddled fruit and topped with soda water.
Host tips
Use a large, clear ice cube to slow dilution. The quality of bourbon and bitters makes a significant difference. A luxardo cherry elevates the drink beyond standard cocktail cherries.
