The story
Believed to have been created in the 1870s at the Manhattan Club in New York City. Legend says it was invented for a banquet hosted by Lady Randolph Churchill (Winston Churchill's mother), though this story is disputed by historians.
Variations
The Perfect Manhattan uses equal parts sweet and dry vermouth. The Rob Roy substitutes Scotch for rye. A Black Manhattan uses amaro in place of vermouth. Some bartenders add a dash of maraschino liqueur.
Host tips
High-proof rye (100+ proof) like Rittenhouse stands up well to the vermouth. The quality of vermouth makes a significant difference in the final drink. Always refrigerate opened vermouth.
