The story
Created by Phil Ward at Death & Co. in New York in 2007. This cocktail helped popularize mezcal in the United States by introducing it in a familiar, approachable format. Named after the Mexican state of Oaxaca, which is renowned for its mezcal production.
Variations
Some versions flame an orange peel over the drink instead of using an orange slice. Others use chocolate bitters in addition to or instead of Angostura. A spicier variation might include a few drops of chile tincture.
Host tips
The quality of the tequila and mezcal are crucial. Use a good reposado tequila and a not-too-smoky mezcal for balance. The agave nectar should be diluted with water for easier mixing.
