The story

The Malibu Bay Breeze is a variation of the classic Cape Codder (vodka and cranberry) and the Bay Breeze (vodka, cranberry, and pineapple), substituting coconut rum for vodka. It became popular in the 1980s and 1990s as Malibu rum gained widespread distribution and tropical-themed cocktails became fashionable.

Variations

A Sea Breeze uses grapefruit juice instead of pineapple. For a stronger version, add a float of dark rum on top. Some bartenders layer the ingredients for a gradient effect. A frozen version can be made by blending all ingredients with ice.

Host tips

Using chilled juices helps maintain the drink's refreshing quality. The sweetness of pineapple juice can vary significantly, so adjust the ratio to taste. While traditionally built in the glass, shaking with ice and straining produces a more integrated flavor.
